Salvationists in Scripture: Mary, Martha, and Lazarus

by Colonel Richard Munn

Within the pages of the greatest story ever told, we find a cast of larger-than-life characters from diverse regions and times. Some of them embody “Salvationism.” That is, the story of their lives and their values represent the essence of Salvation Army word and deed. We might playfully say that they are “Salvationists in Scripture.” Over the course of 2026, we’ll look at 10 people in the Bible who exude Salvationist attributes, from Amos to Andrew, Luke to Lydia, and Micah to Mary. Come back each month as we build our Salvation Army Scripture Hall of Fame.

5. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus: Faithful Soldiers

The home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus of Bethany was a favorite stopping place for Jesus. Bethany means “house of the poor.” Generally, it’s accepted as an indication that this was a poorer neighborhood of splendid Jerusalem. How quite wonderful that Jesus, true to his teaching, deliberately chooses to stay and identify with the poor. No King David Hotel for him.

Of central interest to us right now are the residents of blighted Bethany — Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. They represent countless Salvation Army soldiers who live in tough surroundings and faithfully serve in their local corps. This is their home, and they would want it no other way. Corps officers come and go with regularity, headquarters visits and inspects each year, but the humble, unassuming, quietly faithful soldiers stand the test of time.

They know the neighborhood stories and dynamics; they know the families, they know what’s cookin’. Whether living amid urban grit or rural poverty, in many ways these soldiers are the heart of our Army.

In the gospels, Bethany is a site for hospitality, teaching, and miracles. The home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus exudes a distinct warmth. It’s a place of welcome, food, rest, and family love. We specifically read in John 11:5, “Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.”

Paradoxically, this is so often precisely replicated in our corps communities of faith surrounded by neighborhood deprivation. Visit them and you will invariably find an exuberant hearty reception, abundant food, a relaxed unpretentious atmosphere, and tear-inducing love. More often than not, the fragrant presence of Christ permeates the gathering.

Faithful Salvationist soldiers, we salute you. Jesus sees you, knows you, and loves you.
