Celebrating National Salvation Army Week

by Lt. Colonel Debra Ashcraft

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” —Matthew 25:40

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed National Salvation Army Week and urged all citizens to honor The Salvation Army for its work in the United States. In his proclamation, he stated, “Let us remember that the banner of this organization, and the principles for which it stands, are stalwart bulwarks for the protection of the spiritual and physical needs of our people, and let us salute this great body of unselfish men and women during Salvation Army Week, with the knowledge that they have earned our esteem and praise in the fullest measure.”

I am humbled by these words. Are you? I am truly grateful for the trust and support that The Salvation Army receives. Last year, because of God’s grace and the generosity of donors and volunteers, the Eastern Territory was able to:

  • Serve 7,481,802 meals and distribute 2,457,803 food packages.
  • Provide 1,513,182 nights of safe lodging for individuals and families.
  • Distribute 1,561,829 toys and gifts to children, resulting in thousands of smiles on Christmas morning.

Additionally, survivors of human trafficking found help and hope; preschool children received education and loving care; school-age children were able to attend summer camp and after-school programs offering homework help, music instruction, and recreation; and senior citizens enjoyed a variety of activities and much needed social interaction.

This year, National Salvation Army Week will be observed May 12–18, 2025. How should we celebrate? Rather than taking a bow for all that has been accomplished, let’s thank God for the privilege of serving the least of these, our neighbors in need! Let’s thank God for His provisions. Let’s express our gratitude to the volunteers in our corps and community. Let’s thank and celebrate our generous supporters who fund our social ministries. Most importantly, let’s renew our commitment to God and to our Holy Mission “to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.”

May God bless you, and Happy National Salvation Army Week!
