The Paterson Pattern

by Colonel Richard Munn

A high Salvationist value is the idea that every person in our denominational family is both equipped and deployed for service. Overworked clergy and passive laity make for an ugly, ineffective image. To boot, our history books record that a common practice in early decades was to give every soldier a job” — everything from welcoming people at the front door to making the tea.

So, it is with genuine interest that the SAconnects team learned recently that the Paterson, N.J., Corps is taking this model and turbocharging it by commissioning local officers on the same day and in the very same ceremony as a soldier enrollment. It is novel and public, with immediate effect, and it’s making an energetic impact on corps life.

At the helm and in the heart of this is Lieutenant Joel Monasterio, corps officer. SAconnects took the chance to catch up with the lieutenant to give you, our readers, the story behind the story, and find out what is going on.

How long have you served in the Paterson Corps, and what is the makeup and personality of the corps community of faith?

I have been blessed to be part of the Paterson Corps for almost four years. This vibrant community is filled with diverse individuals who bring joy to ministry. From our devoted Corps Council and local leaders to all our collaborative members and dedicated employees, each person plays a vital role. Together, we cultivate a nurturing environment that encourages growth and spiritual maturity, sharing our journey as brothers and sisters in Christ.

What began your thought process to include local officer commissions on the same day and in the same ceremony as soldier enrollments?

It was sparked by an observation that people frequently share their heartfelt moments during such significant events. These occasions serve as a powerful reminder of the joy and camaraderie that can spring from our journeys. Additionally, we are aware of the genuine potential each person possesses to foster opportunities for their growth.

What local officer commissions have you deployed?

Quite a list! The local officer commissions are Men’s Fellowship President, Recovery Ministry Sergeant, Assistance Corps Sergeant Major, Corps Sergeant Major, Men’s Fellowship Assistant, Women’s Ministry Secretary, Corps Youth Secretary, Kitchen Sergeant, Jr. Soldier Sergeant, Junior Church Coordinator, Corps Youth Secretary, Focus Group Leader, Outreach Leader, Spiritual Life Development Sergeant, Child Safety Coordinator, Corps Cadets Counselor, Music Instructor, and the Youth Group Recreation Coordinator.

What has been the response and impact?

One thrilling response to this practice is the vibrant culture it has ignited, ultimately blossoming into an annual celebration. During this event individuals enthusiastically uplift one another, encouraging each person to present Jesus. The celebration is not just an event; it is a powerful reunion of brothers and sisters united by their shared faith, all eager to share in the testimonies of God’s transformative work.

Especially inspiring is the dedication displayed by participants who commit an entire year to thorough preparation. Together, we celebrate this journey and the sense of belonging that comes from being part of this community of faith.

Do you have any concluding words of encouragement or insight for our readers?

As an active and living body of Christ, we strengthen our faith by proclaiming the life-changing message of salvation. With hearts full of purpose, we embark on a mission to share His boundless love with every corner of the world, generously distributing the gifts and blessings He has bestowed upon us.

The beauty of this journey lies in its expressions of faithfulness, fruitfulness, and love. Living as the Church means viewing our story as an extension of Jesus’ story. We, The Salvation Army, are part of the universal Christian Church, actively working as a model of Heaven on Earth to bring God’s kingdom in His fullness. Hallelujah!

Thank you, Joel, what a great initiative. Well done. You can count on this: The SAconnects team is cheering you and the Paterson Corps onward and upward.
