“The Commander in Rags”

by Rob Jeffery

During her tenure as the National Commander for The Salvation Army in the United States (1904–1934), Commissioner Evangeline Booth starred in a one-person musical stage drama known as “The Commander in Rags.” She performed this play in England and Canada and brought it with her to New York. Though she never performed on Broadway, she graced the stage of the Centennial Memorial Temple in New York City several times with her dramatic presentation. Evangeline was a gifted musician and dramatist and an enthusiastic promoter of the gospel arts.
