Dwelling in Faith

by Joyce Hodgson Post

Imagine a weekend at Camp Wonderland in Sharon, Mass., full of quiet contemplation and inner peace. It’s where the Women’s Ministries team of the Massachusetts Division organized the “Word and Worship 2024” gathering for women connected to The Salvation Army and its various programs — women who know the Army and who are members of its ordained leadership. The theme of the event was “Dwell,” reflecting both their three days at the beautiful campsite and a book by Major Lauren Hodgson, who served as the weekend’s guest.

The Massachusetts Musical Forces contributed a special song titled “Dwell,” with heartfelt lyrics expressing a desire for divine presence: “Dwell O Lord in our midst, in our hearts is our cry now, a sanctuary where your glory dwells.” These words set the tone throughout the weekend for Major Hodgson’s emphasis on maintaining spiritual health and personal growth. Hodgson — who, full disclosure, is my sister-in-law — used humor, straightforward facts, and personal anecdotes to offer practical suggestions applicable to attendees’ lives regardless of their financial or spiritual situations.

Finding peace

Hodgson, the author of Dwell: Learning to Linger in a Fast-Paced World, outlined four essential steps to follow in life: step back, look in, time out, slow down. For each step, she gave explanations and examples designed to help participants establish a solid foundation for successful dwelling. The phrase “Be still and know that I am God” resonated deeply during this gathering: One must be still enough to listen to God’s Word while experiencing joy through personal engagement with Him.

Central to Hodgson’s book is learning how to linger. Over this enriching weekend, 80 women engaged in discussions during meals and walks around Camp Wonderland about integrating these lessons into their daily lives.

Each participant received a copy of Dwell, which contains weekly devotional readings, for continued learning back at home. Hodgson has had numerous similar invitations throughout the Eastern Territory aimed at fostering opportunities for spiritual growth among individuals across all ages.

‘Dwell’ recognized

The book Dwell has achieved recognition; it was selected as a finalist in two Christian categories for the prestigious Best Book Awards (BBA) 2024, an esteemed event sponsored by the American Book Fest.

The journey to complete the writing and editing of Dwell was not without its challenges; it involved carefully navigating complex theological themes while adhering to strict deadlines throughout its production process. The result is a pleasing page-turner for readers who seek to dwell in a special place with God.

“I am humbled by this recognition,” wrote Hodgson after receiving the honors. “May God get all the glory.”

I was blessed to join her at the Camp Wonderland retreat and report on its impact.
