Donut Girl and Doughboy, 1917
by Rob Jeffery
In the First World War (1914–1918), Salvation Army “Donut Girls” didn’t only make sweet treats for the American “Doughboys” fighting for the cause of freedom and democracy in the trenches. They also assisted them with many practical things. Here in this photograph from 1917, a Salvation Army officer assists a visibly wounded soldier by transcribing a letter for his loved ones back home. Oh, the horrors of war! “Peace in our time, O Lord, to all the peoples—peace.”
