Overseas Child Sponsorship

Women’s Ministries supports OCS!

The women of the Bethlehem, PA Corps have opened their eyes to the problem that poverty has imposed upon children around the world. They have committed, as a group, to supporting the Overseas Child Sponsorship program.

Children cannot choose the life circumstances they are born into. They have no power to ensure they have adequate food, clothing, shelter, or education. The facts:

  1. Every five seconds a child dies from hunger.
  2. 22,000 children die each day due to poverty.
  3. Two-thirds of the world’s population live in poverty.
  4. The world’s hungriest children live in Bangladesh, the Congo, India, Indonesia and Pakistan.

These women have set a great example, demonstrating how a Women’s Ministries group can help meet the needs of children around the world.

Your group could be helping many children, like the girl who drew this picture.

In the words of one girl who is impacted by a home in Bolivia:

“I am 13 years old.  Here in this Home they are nice for me.  I am fine here.  I came here when I was three years old or almost 4 years old.  I like this Home, it is a pretty and big one.  I attend to school where I have friends, I like all my school subjects.  I would like to tell you that I am the best student of my classroom.  I think that to study and to learn are good things.  I love to draw, paint and to read.

Here in the Home we had a nice Christmas, and the first day of the new year we also have some activities.  I also like music and to sing.  We have a Christmas tree in the Home.

Now, I say good-bye to you with love.”

How can we HELP?

FIRST: Commit to Prayer

The Overseas Child Sponsorship program partners with three types of institutions: schools, after school & feeding programs,  and children’s homes. These centers need God’s help as they seek to bring hope and healing to the children impacted by their centers.

Commit to praying for:

  • The buildings, as many lack required funding for upkeep, repairs, and resources needed to run the programs
  • Leaders of the programs
  • Children and families impacted
  • Ways God is leading you to support OCS

SECOND: Sponsor a youth program

A school, children’s home, or after-school program could greatly benefit from any contribution to their program. Your group can sponsor a youth program by:

  • Giving a one-time donation of any amount
  • Becoming a regular sponsor with a contribution as low as $25 per month
Program sponsors receive a yearly newsletter from the institution, which gives pictures and information regarding the children at the program. You are also welcome to send an encouraging note to the children or staff, through our office.

The form below has all the details you need to become a sponsor today.

THIRD:
Invite the Sponsorship Director to visit!

The OCS Director is able to visit your Women’s Ministries group to give about the program and ways you can help, even giving opportunities to write letters of encouragement to the centers and the children impacted by the program.

To set up a visit, contact the OCS Director:

FOURTH: Spread the word

One of the biggest ways you can support this vital Salvation Army program is to tell other people about OCS.

Brainstorm ideas together, developing creative ways to invite others to participate in this program. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Talk to other local churches about OCS
  • Distribute brochures, posters, or flyers
  • Offer to speak at service clubs and boards
  • Promote OCS at community events
