Unsung Words of the Christmas Story – Part 11: Out of You

Microsoft Word - Document1Because the Christmas account is one that is so familiar to us, without realizing it, we tend to gloss over words because they seem to roll off our tongue. What would happen if paused for a moment to reflect on those well- worn and somewhat overlooked words and phrases?

…out of you…

“’But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” Matthew 2:6

There is an old technology phrase, “junk in, junk out”. In other words, the quality of data that goes into the computer will affect the quality and accuracy of the data that come out.

This Old Testament prophecy is quoted by Herod’s wise counsel as he tries to decipher the Magi’s announcement of the birth of the Messiah. This is not some isolated prophetic word that relates solely to the small, obscure town of Bethlehem, it can also be a very personal word to each of us. God is speaking to you and me, “out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel”. Out of our lives will come the well-spring of God to bring water to the thirsty around us.

So, what are you filling your life with? Fill yourself with God’s love, compassion, encouragement and mercy then out of you will come the same and it will shepherd God’s people.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, may my words, thoughts, actions and reactions this day flow from what I have so lovingly received from You. Amen.
